North Chicago Mayor Leon Rockingham and Marvin Bembry, the President of the North Chicago Chamber of Commerce jointly announced an agreement with SCORE Chicago to provide free business counseling and inexpensive workshops in the community later this year. Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois arranged the meeting and brought the parties together.
“The Chicago Chapter of SCORE provides counseling, workshops and other resources to entrepreneurs and small businesses through fourteen branch locations in Cook and Lake Counties,” said its Chair Larry Lakin. “The chapter has about a hundred volunteer counselors, with business expertise in numerous areas. It’s a national nonprofit association and resource partner of the Small Business Administration.”
The three organizations plan a fall luncheon to kick off the alliance, with tables by subject to encourage discussions between counselors and business owners on topics like marketing, sales, cash flow management, and business planning. The participants also discussed the possibility of jointly sponsoring a major business expo in 2009.
In addition, Mayor Rockingham and President Bembry agreed to refer to SCORE individuals from the local community who might be interested in becoming counselors. SCORE volunteers are business executives and entrepreneurs who have achieved success in their businesses and now want to give back by advising and helping other entrepreneurs and small businesses succeed.
